Washington, DC – For most of us, Thanksgiving is a time to reunite with loved ones, feast on delicious food and contemplate all that we have to be thankful for. However, for thousands of people in the DC metropolitan area, Thanksgiving takes on an even bigger meaning. For those battling HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illness, Thanksgiving is about living to see another holiday and taking a short break from their daily battles.
Food & Friends’ staff, and more than 1,000 volunteers, prepared and delivered complete Thanksgiving dinners to the critically ill in the Washington, DC area for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is such a special time at Food & Friends, as we deliver to each of our clients enough food to feed four people. When you are living with a life-challenging illness, as our clients are, you often have to rely on the kindness and generosity of family and friends. By allowing our clients to host, we are providing them not only with a delicious Thanksgiving meal, complete with all the trimmings, but also a slice of normalcy and dignity that may otherwise be lacking in their often difficult lives.
